February 2014 Desktop Wallpaper – Lost Coast

I couldn’t be more stoked to have been named the winner of the #mydistantshore Instagram contest held by Chris Burkard. Chris has one of the best surfing photo portfolios around, so it’s a huge honor to be selected from all of the excellent submissions. My February calendar features the winning self-portrait taken at the beginning of January in Shelter Cove, California.

The combination of a foggy day with the black sand beach and white surf made for some great natural contrast, but the little editing I did do started with the Sleet preset found in my black and white preset pack for Lightroom.

Fresh Shots – One Month in San Francisco

For those that don’t know, I spend my day hours as a web developer and in early February I packed up a few things to pursue new professional knowledge in the Bay Area. The change in scenery has been incredibly inspiring and I can’t remember the last day that I missed the sunset. Being here has also led my photography to take an interesting turn. I’ve been exploring new ways to visualize scenes for editing using VSCO presets and lots of high contrast black and white, semi-replicating the feeling of film.

I’ve been to Yosemite and Big Sur twice and my new favorite thing to do is drive down Highway 1, taking in the ocean at sunset – windows down, music up. Here’s a collection of my favorite shots from the last month. I’ll be in the Bay Area for two more months, so expect more sunsets and ocean scenes to come!

February 2012 Desktop Wallpaper – Montana de Oro Sunset

February 2012 Desktop Wallpaper Montana de Oro

This month, I’ve introduced several new sizes to the monthly wallpaper, including a Facebook cover photo that works with the new Timeline feature that has recently been rolling out. I reviewed my web stats for the last year and released the wallpaper in the top 15 most popular desktop dimensions for browsing my site and I will continue to do so each month.

This photo was shot at Montana de Oro State Park in California. My favorite part of this area of California, aside for the beautiful scenery, is that there was absolutely no one around. I didn’t see a single soul for the nearly 3 hours spent on this bit of coastline. At this particular area, the leading lines of the rock features were interesting to me and made natural shapes out of the ocean water. The sunset this spring evening was a particularly long one, and I was grateful to have the extra time for composing each shot perfectly.

Monday Inspiration, Volume 1

Like most people, I’ve always had a love/hate relationships with Mondays. On one hand, it’s leaving behind weekend fun usually spent in the mountains or traveling with my long-distance girlfriend and returning to the daily grind of working at the office. On the other, after hours, it gives me a chance to get caught up with inspiring things that I come across that I might have missed while out playing on the weekends. I follow endless amounts of blogs and inspiring sites, and each Monday I would like to share a few things that hopefully inspire you throughout the week.
