Driving Highway 1

Spanning the majority of the California coastline, Highway 1 graces many adventurer’s bucket lists. Every convertible driver’s dream road runs parallel to arguably the most beautiful coastline in the United States. Living in San Francisco, it’s typically a cheaper and much more convenient flight to Los Angeles, but a few weeks ago I found myself in circumstances that returning from a road trip made taking the otherwise-known Pacific Coast Highway the best way back home. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to turn it into an adventure.

My Bucket List

The following is my bucket list. It’s a list of things to see, to do, and to be before I die. I’ve gone back and forth on whether or not to make this list public. I consider this list very personal and for a few years it has set in a dirty, wrinkled notebook that I’ve occasionally added to. Pages are beginning to fall out of the notebook, so instead of converting to a private digital copy, I’ve decided to put this list on my site to share with the world. I believe it’s important to put things out there – both to inspire and also to be held accountable.

Be prepared – this list is long. Some of it might be considered unrealistic. Some things I’m more passionate about than others, and some things may be easily achievable. My greatest fear is leaving this world having not really experienced it. Having a list that I can turn to for inspiration keeps me driven. This list will continue to evolve – both checking off and adding to.

Because this is just a giant list of text, I would love to hear tips on a better way to organize this. Contact me if you have any recommendations. If you have a bucket list I would encourage you to put it online. Share it with the world. Put a link in the comments below so that we can take inspiration from each other.

Friend’s Bucketlists

June 2012 Desktop Wallpaper – Death Valley

Every time I’ve shown this photo, I’m always met with extreme curiosity about why the rocks slide across the desert. Is it weather? Humans? UFOs? The truth is no one really knows. The phenomenon has never been captured on film, but scientists speculate that the rocks slide across the desert floor by high winds that are timed perfectly after a rare freeze. The icy surface makes it easy for the 80 pound rocks to glide before settling back down to rest until the next weather pattern blows through. I definitely recommend visiting Death Valley. It is, by far, one of my favorite national parks in the US.

May 2012 Desktop Wallpaper – Sámara, Costa Rica

May 2012 Desktop Wallpaper

In mid-April, I traveled to Costa Rica to enjoy some warmer weather and relaxation time on the beach. I’ve been to Costa Rica before and it’s one of my favorite countries to visit. The locals are extremely friendly, the food is great, and the weather is perfect. Not to mention the beautiful beaches. This beach is right next to the villa that we stayed in outside of a town called Sámara. Horses would run on the shore around dusk as the fishing boats were pulling into the harbor just as the evening sun set. I always find a spring trip is the perfect transition from winter to spring/summer weather in Colorado.

National Geographic releases new adventure travel maps

National Geographic Adventure Map Everest

National Geographic has had a line of adventure maps around for a few years now, but recently the company has announced that they will be expanding the maps to include more countries as well as locations considered off the grid destinations. The company looks to add nearly 60 new locations by the end of 2012, and as always their maps are waterproof and tear-resistant, making them some of the best maps available for the wanderer that likes to carry a tent to their next destination.
On a personal note, I enjoy these maps because they can be written on with a non-permanent white-board marker that can be easily removed.

For now, check out their current list of adventure maps.
