California beach moody long exposure

New Work & My First Editing Video Tutorial

I’m excited to announce that starting today, every new fine art photo I release will be accompanied with a for-purchase video tutorial explaining my entire editing process. Each tutorial will include the original RAW file that allows the purchaser to follow along with their own version. Vision is a big part of photography, but it’s not all accomplished on scene and in camera. Vision can be brought to life on the screen, as well. These days editing is just as important as composition and camera settings and I want to share what goes on in my head during the editing process with the rest of the world. This video tutorial and all future tutorials are only $5.

About This Shot

I shot this photo on March 8, 2014 just south of San Francisco off Highway 1 near Pescadero. After relaxing for most of the Saturday, the rainy skies looked as though they would clear to deliver a great sunset south of the bay. An idea has been in my head for a shot near Gray Whale Cove that would require some bright orange skies to complete, so I headed that way thinking today might be the day. Turns out, not so much. As soon as I exited the city, the skies clouded back over and my sunset hopes were gone. No matter, however. A trip to the beach during cloudy weather is still a trip to the beach, so I continued on my way.

February 2014 Desktop Wallpaper – Lost Coast

I couldn’t be more stoked to have been named the winner of the #mydistantshore Instagram contest held by Chris Burkard. Chris has one of the best surfing photo portfolios around, so it’s a huge honor to be selected from all of the excellent submissions. My February calendar features the winning self-portrait taken at the beginning of January in Shelter Cove, California.

The combination of a foggy day with the black sand beach and white surf made for some great natural contrast, but the little editing I did do started with the Sleet preset found in my black and white preset pack for Lightroom.

May 2013 Desktop Wallpaper – Bowling Ball Beach

Late April and early May has been a whirlwind for me with a cross-country move and several trips in between, so my apologies for the delay on the May wallpaper. Better late than never, though, right?! May’s photo comes from a little known beach in northern California called Bowling Ball Beach. These boulders range from 1 foot wide to some close to 4 feet. A long exposure really sets a nice mood and this particular evening I was blessed with an amazing sunset to complement the boulders.

March 2013 Desktop Wallpaper – Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Over the past month I’ve made the move to Bay Area from California. My last few weeks have presented amazing opportunities not only to shoot with the excellent photographers that live in this area, but to photograph something different from the mountains of Colorado. I’ve spend a good amount of my time just driving down Highway 1, taking in sunsets. This shot was taken near Santa Cruz at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse.

May 2012 Desktop Wallpaper – Sámara, Costa Rica

May 2012 Desktop Wallpaper

In mid-April, I traveled to Costa Rica to enjoy some warmer weather and relaxation time on the beach. I’ve been to Costa Rica before and it’s one of my favorite countries to visit. The locals are extremely friendly, the food is great, and the weather is perfect. Not to mention the beautiful beaches. This beach is right next to the villa that we stayed in outside of a town called Sámara. Horses would run on the shore around dusk as the fishing boats were pulling into the harbor just as the evening sun set. I always find a spring trip is the perfect transition from winter to spring/summer weather in Colorado.

February 2012 Desktop Wallpaper – Montana de Oro Sunset

February 2012 Desktop Wallpaper Montana de Oro

This month, I’ve introduced several new sizes to the monthly wallpaper, including a Facebook cover photo that works with the new Timeline feature that has recently been rolling out. I reviewed my web stats for the last year and released the wallpaper in the top 15 most popular desktop dimensions for browsing my site and I will continue to do so each month.

This photo was shot at Montana de Oro State Park in California. My favorite part of this area of California, aside for the beautiful scenery, is that there was absolutely no one around. I didn’t see a single soul for the nearly 3 hours spent on this bit of coastline. At this particular area, the leading lines of the rock features were interesting to me and made natural shapes out of the ocean water. The sunset this spring evening was a particularly long one, and I was grateful to have the extra time for composing each shot perfectly.
